Compassion is one of the traits of powerful and effective leaders. Paraphrasing Junpa, one of Dalai Lamas English language translators, a compassionate leader is one endowed with a deep and genuine sense of empathy and concern for the sufferings and plight of others, and who strives relentlessly to assuage or relieve such sufferings. Though such leaders are rare to come by, one leader who fits the description of a compassionate leader is Honourable Iliya Bello Samya( Kuyan Banan Tangale), Executive Chairman, Billiri Local Government. In a demonstration of his penchant for compassionate deeds, the Honourable Chairman on October 14th, 2013 facilitated the release of 20 prison inmates who were serving various jail terms in Billiri Prisons by paying off their fines. He promised to work with the prisons towards ensuring that the institution discharges it task of reforming inmates effectively. Addressing the 20 released inmates, the Chairman asked them to view their incarceration as a life time experience. He enjoined them to draw from the positive experiences and lessons acquired while in jail. He urged them to desist from engaging in criminal acts so as not to find themselves in a similar situation again. The Chairman later donated Sallah food items to the inmates still under incarceration. The foodstuff included a ram, two bags of rice among others. Other speakers who spoke during the event included Hon. Lewi Lasare, Member Gombe State House of Assembly, who also made a personal donation of N500 transport and feeding fare to each of the 20 inmates, Dr. Daniel Maddo, National President, Tangale Community Development Association(TCDA), The District Head of Todi, who spoke on behalf of HRH (Dr) Abdu Buba Mai Sheru II, OON, JP, 15th Mai Tangle.
