Completed the RockNRoll Las Vegas Marathon in 4:18:30. Almost halfway there, with Seattle WA being the 25th State to be done in a couple of weeks. HIGHLIGHTS - Huge Expo with lots of merchandise and loads of free stuff. One of the better Expos Ive seen. Not easy to get to, but not congested at all. No problem with bib and swag bag pickup. - Race started in the evening, so I got to gamble and party the night before and slept in. - Running the Strip at night with all the lights and sound was really cool to see. - This marathon has a 5 hour limit, so you need to keep pace and make cutoff points, otherwise they haul you out on a shuttle. - Running Freemont street for only the marathoners was a great experience. Half Marathoners didnt get to see the crazy crowd and all the energy. - Temperature was in the low 50s at the start, ideal for running. Then it dipped down to the 40s towards the finish, which was a plus. - The course was pretty much flat as advertised, but watch out there were some hills on the second half of the race. - The finish back down Las Vegas Blvd was phenomenal. Probably the best one Ive seen. Spectators were really getting into it, and the music blasting the whole way down the Strip. - Favorite signs: All this craziness just for a FREE banana You have a bad case of the RUNS! Run now beer later LOWLIGHTS - Pricey! Get ready to shell out over $150 for early registration. And it goes higher closer to race day. That doesnt include all the money youll be loosing gambling :-) - Security was not as good as it should be. They just take your bag and dont even check. - Plenty of cracks and reflectors on the roads, which made it dangerous running in the dark. - Many mile markers were off the mark and only a handful of spectators in the later miles. Scary running on those dark streets and no bands playing. - The medal was nice but the half marathon medals were better. - Not much food at the end, and it was a long half a mile walk to the gear check area. From what I hear, this race had over 40,000 runners which made it very congested in the corrals. Although it had a lot of positives, I would recommend this race if youre only doing the Half Marathon.
