Completely agree with Elon Musk: Artificial Intelligence is one of the biggest threats to humankind. Every species strives to reproduce and dominate. Even within humanity stronger civilisations have always dominated their weak neighbours. It is simple Darwinian theory: survival of the fittest. Humans, as the most intelligent creatures, have beaten down every other species for utter supremacy of planet Earth. With the advent of true Artificial Intelligence, the AI computer will also have intelligent aspirations. Like intelligent humans, artificially intelligent computers will strive to reproduce and dominate. It is inevitable that humans - as the only other intelligent beings - will stand in the path to dominance, of the AI computers. The problem is that with technology evolving at its current pace, it is conceivable that by the time that Artificial Intelligence is born, computers will be much more powerful than human brains (especially with the advent of quantum computing) and be more physically durable than our frail human bodies (indeed cloud computing could allow AI to exist without a physical form). Furthermore, computers run most human daily activities. Without these, human-kind could not function: Electricity generation, manufacturing, transport, food production, the internet, healthcare... So if AI computers were to revolt against humans - they could literally paralyze us. The paralysis would also extend to defense and weaponry, and even our nuclear arsenals: all of which run on computers and rely on GPS. And with cloud-based computing we could be fighting an intelligent enemy without a physical form! AI computers will operate from the cloud and such such will not be able to be destroyed with bullets (like the terminator films) We really should heed these warnings and put regulatory oversight into research of this field. The scenario I paint above may seem far-fetched, but the fantasy aspect of the story is just the invention of Artificial Intelligence. As soon as that gap is bridged, the rest of the story is very plausible, and I would even argue: inevitable.
