Complex storm system emerging over the central U.S. will bring heavy rains to the Gulf Coast and accumulating snows to portions of the Plains and Midwest... Vigorous upper energy pushing out of the northwestern U.S. will spread precipitation across the Central Plains and Midwest on Saturday. The anomalous Arctic airmass in place over much of the Nation will allow for a swath of accumulating snows...but a lack of moisture should limit precipitation totals. The energy aloft and associated snows will lift northeastward through the Great Lakes on Sunday. Farther south...a second burst of energy aloft is expected to swing through the Southwest late this weekend. Gulf moisture surging northward ahead of this feature should fuel heavy rains with embedded thunderstorms along the Central Gulf Coast early Sunday. Precipitation is expected to spread northward into the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys...and below normal temperatures across the region will make snow a possibility. Scattered snow showers will continue to develop along a frontal boundary stretched from the Pacific coast to the Rockies. The front should gradually sink south on Saturday...shifting the activity southward through the Central Great Basin and Central Rockies. Precipitation totals should stay on the lighter side with the exception of some heavier amounts along the favored slopes of the terrain...especially in the higher elevations
