Computer science researchers funded by the DARPA program have demonstrated to Andy Greenberg, on the staff of Forbes Magazine. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, working off of their $80,000 grant from the Pentagon, are studying vulnerabilities in vehicles for the government. The two were able to use a laptop to take total control of the vehicle. They could jerk the wheel, slam on the brakes, tighten the seatbelt, forge speedometer readouts, disable the brakes, disable the headlights, etc. With these capabilities, a determined operative could stage a deadly high-speed car crash, and it would appear to be merely an "accident." This adds an interesting aspect to the mysterious death of Michael Hastings, a journalist who died in a deadly 1-car accident only hours after warning his colleagues that the FBI was targeting him.
