Computers used to solve two-person, limit Texas holdem. Solve is in quotes because Texas holdem isnt a perfect information game like checkers or chess, where every player can see all the information about the current state. They used a super-simplified version of the game, where two players are limited to a fixed number of bets, all of a fixed value. It took 17TB of storage (with clever compression schemes) and a cluster of 200 2.1GHz AMD cores, each with 32GB of RAM. The analysis worked by switching between all possible strategies, playing out the entire game, and then calculating regret values which then feed back into the strategies. The researchers are confident that even though the game isnt technically solved, a person playing against a computer with the most optimized strategy would be unlike to win a game playing 12 hours/day for 70 years.
