Comtrak Comtrak is a compatible photographic soundtrack which combines monophonic academy sound with four-track stereophonic sound. It is a photographic multiple-track format that combines pulse code modulation, variable area, and push-pull recordings. It is based on the earlier described Colortek system. The CCD scanner of that system and the reading technology with weave correction, and other remedial facilities are retained. Eight tracks make up the new Comtrak system, which delivers selectively either academy monophonic reproduction, or four or five separate tracks of high-quality stereo. The SMPTE time code is used for electronic character display below the theater screen or on a television screen. A single print inventory satisfies all the requirements for theatrical exhibition and distribution. -- SMPTE Sept. 1981 Abstract for article by John Mosely and Keith Johnson. Top to bottom: Data/TC track, L, C, R, Academy Mono, reference line, Surround. The data track is outside the normal reproducer scanned area. The 4 audio tracks vary in position, not width, and do not modulate the light beam in mono playback. (I dont see anything push-pull about it.)
