Conan gets it right. One of the functions of free speech is to unpack ideas that are sometimes off-limits due to power distance or dogma. Protecting that right does not mean diminishing the rights of others to speak, it is in fact the encouragement of even more debate even from those who disagree with you. Which is my beef with the Oatmeal comic being circulated right now, it proudly mis-represents what others believe only to restrict faith discourse to private life. That in itself is a form of secular fundamentalism that has pervaded our culture and encroaches on the many who have faith in their lives.
