Conceived in 1996 The Kraal is a fully self-sustainable, eco-minded establishment operating off the grid for over 16 years now. Our wake-up call is the rooster. Our energy source the sun. To say we’ve ”gone green” is a gross understatement. Arriving at The Kraal means saying goodbye to the world you know and getting acquainted with the way life should be lived. Food and Beverages Bring as much supplies as you can as the closest supermarket is 20 kilometres away. Cooking options include an open fire, a wood-fired oven outside and gas burners in the kitchen. Our next-door neighbour, Kholeka, cooks traditional meals for R65 a plate. The kitchen at The Kraal prepares some of the finest pizzas and T-bone steaks on the Wild Coast. We also sell T-bones frozen if you’d like to do your own thing. The bar at The Kraal stocks red wine, Heineken, Whiskey, Vodka and Tequila. Local beer (Black Label, Castle, Milk Stout) is also available in 750ml quart form in the village. Mussels and oysters are readily available from locals but PLEASE REMEMBER you need a permit from the post office to purchase it. Crayfish season is from March 1st to October 31st so no crays on the Christmas table. Showers The Kraal’s showers work on the bucket system and works like follows. You fill a bucket with water according to your temperature requirements. You pour that water into another bucket that is connected via PVC pipe to a shower head on a lower level. Now you walk down, turn the tap, stand under the shower head and voila - a DIY shower. The bucket system allows us to limit water use to one bucket per person per shower and helps preserve our precious water. Our shower system runs off the sun so it’s best to shower during the day or early evening or mid mornings from 9am onwards. Toilets Biogas toilets can be found in the top section. Please don’t flush anything other than human waste and toilet paper and only flush if absolutely necessary. Having said that, don’t forget to flush if absolutely necessary. Disposal Paper and tins are welcome; plastic and glass not so much. Four blue disposal bins are clearly marked “Glass” “Paper” “Organic” “Plastic”. We burn paper; dispose of plastic; work organic waste back into the system. ALL SEAFOOD WASTE are returned directly to the ocean and kept separate in a bucket or in a plastic bag. Cell phones, laptops and other stress devices One of the best things about The Kraal is there is no electricity. That means you can’t charge your phone and make contact with the office. Bliss, we know. Please don’t ask for your phone to be charged. Rather store it in a safe place and switch off completely. Things to do and bring Where to begin? We are next to the ocean with a pristine beach to the left and sparkling rock pools to the right. Bring beach balls, snorkels, bats, sunscreen, towels and umbrellas. There are hiking trails to Shark’s Point and The Waterfall so bring hiking boots and walking sticks. Bird and whale spotters will enjoy the view from veranda – a pair of binoculars will come in handy (forgot to mention dolphins but they come around so often it’s like reminding you we have grass). River and sea fishing rods are recommended as both here are filled with fish. A head torch will make your life considerably easier when the sun goes down. We do provide candles but you’re welcome to bring your own. Last but not least, bring a good book. One of the most rewarding activities is kicking back in a Kraal couch with a best-selling novel. If you have any questions simply email me (hansiesmit@yahoo) or Dillon ([email protected]). We look forward to having you.
