Concern on parents taking kids to watch violent movies in the cinemas DEAR EDITOR, Friday, October 24, 2014 I LOVE to go to movies but I have been noticing a very disturbing trend as I keep seeing parents bringing their young children to movies that contain excessive amounts of violence. Unbelievably, some parents even bring babies to the movies while others force their children to watch movies that they wouldnt find interesting. An example of such was seeing a rather sulky little girl fidgeting throughout the Equalizer and another one include two little girls aged between six and eight watching Annabelle in which I cringed when I saw a throat being slit. One other example was sitting beside a little boy aged seven years old who went through an entire movie full of swear words and gore but funnily enough, his mother made him close his eyes during a kissing scene. Invariably, children would get bored, start talking and crying loudly while some would start running up and down the aisles. I am puzzled by why parents would bring their children to the cinema and I assume its a situation where the parents really want to see a movie, and perhaps dont want to pay or could not find a babysitter. Could this also be that the parents dont see a problem with their children treating the theatre like a playground while they enjoy a movie or they feel that their children are matured enough to watch movies that are rated PG13 and above? This also goes into the category of people taking phone calls and texting during the movies, while some even go to the extent of having a running commentary of the movie. I dont seem to remember this happening when I was much younger. I wonder if there is a possible solution to my dilemma. Is it unreasonable to expect a quiet movie-going experience and environment or is this something that will forever be in the past? Trying to enjoy the movie *** [When a reader is not happy about something and wants Brunei to know about it or act on a problem or issue, this is where the complaint is posted.] Note: If youve got something on your mind, write to The Editor at [email protected] or via fax: +6732 454752.
