Concerned Group Cautions Ekiti PDP Aspirants Against Smear Campaigns A Political group in Ekiti State, the Ekiti Progressive Youths (EPY) has cautioned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in the State against smear campaign, saying; “the aspirants should rather deploy their resources into promoting themselves and the PDP instead of sponsoring negative articles in the media.” Rising from its meeting in Ado-Ekiti today, the group said in a statement signed by its President, Ebenezer Olaleye that it was miffed by an article sponsored in a national newspaper by one of the aspirants, Senator Gbenga Aluko. The group said; “presenting himself as the only sellable candidate for the PDP among other aspirants, and running his fellow aspirants down as was done in the sponsored article is inimical to the chances of the PDP in the governorship election.” “Gbenga Aluko, in presenting himself as the only aspirant with the required intellectual capacity to engage the incumbent Governor, Kayode Fayemi on any topic whatsoever, it never occurred to him that other aspirants like Senator Bode Olowoporoku, a holder of Manchester Universitys Doctorate Degree (Ph.D) in Economics and former Minister of Planning, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, a teacher, journalist and lawyer, who holds first degree in Political Science; M.Sc Political Science (with specialization in International Relations); LL.B and B. L, and Chief Bisi Omoyeni; an accomplished banker will be better equipped in matters relating to governance than himself (Aluko), a graduate of Geography, whose Post-Graduate course was on International Oil Trading and Pricing. Or is Ekiti an oil producing State that requires an expert in Oil Trading and Pricing as governor?” While advising Gbenga Aluko to return to Ekiti and set up a strong political structure instead of staying in Abuja to lobby for the PDP governorship ticket, while also running other aspirants down, EPY said; “Even in Gbonyin Local Government where he hails from, the PDP structure is under the control of another aspirant.” “It is on record that Senator Gbenga Aluko decamped to the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), alongside former Senate President, Dr Chuba Okadigbo before the 2003 general elections, and after the 2003 elections, he did not play any active role in the politics of Ekiti State, until 2007 that he contested the governorship election under the Labour Party. He came distant fifth in the election, polling less than 5,000 votes. “Most importantly, if out of all PDP aspirants in Ekiti State, Gbenga Aluko sees himself as the only one that is credible, would the others that are not credible still be needed to rally votes for the PDP if perhaps, he (Aluko) emerges as the candidate? “Leaders of the PDP in Ekiti State should therefore call aspirants like Gbenga Aluko, who are going about running other aspirants down to order so that they dont destroy this golden chance that PDP has to return to power in the State.”
