Concerned Health Professionals of NY; Compendium of Scientific, Medical, and Media Findings Demonstrating Risks and Harms Of Fracking (Unconventional Gas And Oil Extraction) From: Concerned Health Professionals Of New York concernedhealthny.org/Compendium/ “The Compendium is a fully referenced compilation of the significant body of scientific, medical and journalistic findings demonstrating risks and harms of fracking. Organized to be accessible to public officials, researchers, journalists and the public at large, the Compendium succinctly summarizes key studies and other findings relevant to the ongoing public debate about unconventional methods of oil and gas extraction. The Compendium should be used by readers to grasp the scope of the information about both public health and safety concerns and the economic realities of fracking that frame these concerns. The reader who wants to delve deeper may consult the reviews, studies, and articles referenced. (In addition, a fully searchable, near-exhaustive citation database of peer-reviewed journal articles pertaining to shale gas and oil extraction is housed at the PSE Healthy Energy Library. “The pace at which new studies and information are emerging has rapidly accelerated in the past year and a half: the first few months of 2014 saw more studies published on the health effects of fracking than all studies published in 2011 and 2012 combined. The Compendium is organized in reverse chronological order, with the most recent information first. Studies cited in the first edition are current through June 30, 2014 ” “Fifteen compelling themes emerged in reviewing the data, and these serve as the organizational structure of the Compendium. The document opens with sections on two of the most acute threats, air pollution and water contamination, and ends with medical and scientific calls for more study and transparency. Readers will quickly notice the recent upsurge in studies making each section top-heavy with recent data.” concernedhealthny.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/CHPNY-Fracking-Compendium.pdf This is the kind of database California needs, and the kind required for public comment to The California Department of Conservation ... to the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) due to interest in the regulation of oil and gas production in California. Pursuant to Senate Bill 4 (Pavley 2013), the California Natural Resources Agency commissioned CCST to conduct an independent scientific assessment of well stimulation treatments, including hydraulic fracturing, in California. The purpose of the report is to synthesize and assess the available scientific information associated with well completion treatments in California. The review will survey hydraulic fracturing, matrix acidizing, and acid fracturing as they are applied both onshore and offshore for oil and gas production in the state. Published information will be used to investigate the history and current application of well stimulation treatments, changes in the potential for oil and gas development in California made possible by well stimulation treatments, and evidence of environmental and public health impacts attributable to these technologies. Interested parties (were/are) invited to propose relevant, scientific literature for inclusion in the report. Literature can be submitted in two ways: 1. At ccst.us/projects/fracking_public/referenceSB4.php 2. Submissions can be emailed as attachments to [email protected]. File formats that can be imported into bibliography software such as BibTeX(.bib), EndNote XML (.xml) Research Information Systems (.ris), or Zotero (zotero.sqlite) are preferred. The deadline for literature submissions was July 15, 2014.
