Concerning leaders and leadership, we are our own worst enemy. This is true regardless of who the leader is, or what they accomplish. One of my favorite leaders of all time is King David because he had a heart after God, and God loved him the most. The greatest king to ever rule Israel, David never lost a battle against competitors for his throne. With God by his side, King David never met an enemy he could not defeat, until it came to himself. David’s difficulties in leading himself remind me of the old cartoon character Pogo, created by Walt Kelly. On an Earth Day poster in 1970, Pogo said: “We have met the enemy, and he is us!” When I reflect back upon my past failures and mistakes, it had less to do with my competition, and more to do with me. I was my own worst enemy. This is the truth concerning most leaders.
