Confederate General Felix K. Zollicoffer crossed the Cumberland - TopicsExpress

Confederate General Felix K. Zollicoffer crossed the Cumberland River to Beech Grove against orders. The following excerpt is from a letter from Zollicoffer to Lieutenant-Colonel Mackall in Bowling Green, KY. : "SIR: Your two dispatches of the 4th reached me late last night. Enclosed I send copy of the letter addressed to you yesterday. I infer from yours that I should not have crossed the river, but now it is too late. My means of recrossing is so limited, I could hardly accomplish it in the face of the enemy..." "...The position that I occupy north of the river is a fine base for operations in front. It is a much stronger natural position for defense than that on the south bank. I think it should be held at all hazards..." -F.K. Zollicoffer, Brigadier General To read more correspondence from the Battle of Mill Springs, check out the Battle of Mill Springs, KY January 19, 1862, a book available here at the Mill Springs Battlefield Visitor Center.
