Confession #1348 Love for Physics mixed with Craze for Hollywood Sci-Fi movies: In my Physics classes when i have to explain certain things to my students that are not possible to do experiment in class or difficult to describe what those are, then i give references from Hollywood Movies to make them understand better. For Example: 1. When i teach about Particle Accelerators, there is no way that i can show them a real accelerator and just showing them a picture or two, they will not know how those work. So here is my solution to that... I ask them Have you watch IRON MAN 2? Then i explain, In the movie the setup that IRON MAN used to discover a new element to replace the Palladium to use it in his Mini Arc Reactor of his Chest, that setup is a Particle Accelerator 2. When i have to explain Gravity is directly proportional to the Mass of the Planet. Well i cannot go to another planet to show them in practical. So i ask them, Have you watch John Carter? Have you seen that John can jump much higher and farther than he can jump on earth? Then i explain to them The Gravity on the Mar is approximately 1/3rd of the Gravity on Earth since the mass of the Mars is much lesser than the mass of the Earth. That is why he can jump higher and farther than on he can on earth. Another is videos of Apollo Mission on the Moon. ETC... Anyone would like to attend my Physics classes???
