Confession #81: I was working outside trying to make plants grow in my backyard, when this little girl who lived next door came up to me and asked me, What makes plants grow? I was tired. It was hot. I didnt feel like explaining the photosynthetic marvels of nature, or the complexities of plant-based life, so I resolved this with the best answer I could come up with. See that up there? I said, pointing at the sun, The plants are trying to reach it. They grow so they can reach the sun. A few hours later, after Id had some water and sat down for a bit, I looked over and saw her standing on a stepladder in the middle of her yard, trying with all her strength to keep a pot of Begonias held above her head. Her mother went outside and yelled, what do you think youre doing? The little girl simply responded, I want the flowers to go to the sun. She then dropped the pot of Begonias on the ground, shattering the pot and spilling the flowers onto the dirt. I went inside very quickly.
