Confession: I almost never listen to music for pleasure and most - TopicsExpress

Confession: I almost never listen to music for pleasure and most of the time I drive with an educational or funny podcast or in silence. When I was in high school I felt like people never sat with their own thoughts enough and avoided silence, so I embraced it. I felt like music was trying to manipulate my emotions the way advertising does, so Id just think about stuff instead of playing the radio. (Plus radio was garbage.) I never searched for new music to listen to. Id look in record bins, but only to see what I knew, not find anything else. Other people would introduce me to things that I eventually loved, but I never really made a musical discovery on my own. I loved Elvis Costello, although the first Elvis album I bought was Imperial Bedroom and it took me at least 3 listens to like it, as if my ears needed to adjust to get it. DEVO. Yo La Tengo - And Then The Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. Morphine - Cure for Pain, The Night. All Calexico is amazing. Paul Simon Graceland on repeat forever. Peter Gabriel - I loved the Passion soundtrack (Last Temptation of Christ.) I had some Styx records. Most of my parents records were like Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Donovan, Sixteen Tons, Kisses Sweeter than Wine, etc. I had friends try and explain the allure of metal to me, the inside humor, the neat references and the artwork - I just never got it. I never got country. I never even got into Neil Young. My first concert was Def Leppard I think. Then Robert Plant. I loved YES, but I was never into Rush which I considered to be their evil redneck polar opposite. I loved Pink Floyd of course. Dabbled in some Velvet Underground and King Crimson. I liked Laurie Anderson and even Tori Amos. Liked weird stuff like Danny Elfman and Brian Eno. Im sure if my paltry CD collection was not in a box right now I could remember more stuff than this. Oh, Radiohead, how could I forget you. When I was super young my sister and I really liked this terrible Air Supply tape. Im sure I listened to Siouxsie and the Banshees at some point, Morrissey/The Smiths, The Doors, Janes Addiction, The Beatles, Daft Punk, Fleet Foxes, Ben Folds. Some people have wrapped their entire lives in music. They release emotional places with it, create their own movie soundtracks, use it as an escape or a drug, be contemplative... I dunno, man. I kind of feel like I missed out on something. I never had that drive. I hated anything that was popular at the time. Then again I wouldnt have it any other way I guess. Ive done a lot of driving and thinking. Thats not so bad. Oh I remember what got me thinking about all this. The Picard Maneuver video. I liked the soundtrack. Then we listened to some related stuff in the kitchen. I forgot music could be so much fun. I wish there was a FB rant keystroke so that people would have to click read more to be flooded with all your bullshit. https://youtube/watch?v=x2o77i74T48
