Confession: I normally dont make posts like this; and dont really know whats compelling me to share the following story that just happened in Times Square. As I walked down 7th Ave and the corner of 41st Street from an electronics store, I was in a bad mood. Matter of fact, I was super annoyed when a young man, looking really down on his luck approached. Before he could say anything, I snapped, I dont have anything to give you! He replied, I wasnt gonna ask you for money, just if you can buy me an Iced Coffee. I kept it moving as I said, No....a moment passes and Im down the block. I turn around, he tries the next person, a woman, who smiled and said, No, smiling as she glides past him. My heart sank. At this point, I know that I am horrible person. I thought, What if that were me? He only asked for a Coffee. I double back and wave him to me. I apologize for how I reacted to you, I say. You only said, no, he responds. No, that was uncalled for, I retort pointing across the street to the McDonalds. Lets go to McDonalds and get your Iced Coffee. We walk in, and hes grateful. The look in his eyes told me hes going through it. I order his Joe, then decide I want one, too. He ordered his with lots of sugar and cream. Me, black as always, sans cream, sweeteners, or sugar. As we waited, I introduced myself. He told me his name. We received our beverages, and as we parted ways, I said to him, God Bless you. I guess that share this out of guilt. Guilt that I acted way out of character. Because, I try to do good deeds for those less fortunate on a daily basis, whether its swiping a young mother onto the subway, or giving directions to someone trying to find their destination. But today, I was a jerk. I slipped, and Im man enough to admit that Im far from perfect. Although in my mid 30s, Im still trying to mature and become the person I aim to become. Be blessed today. Be a blessing to someone else. Pay it forward. Even though NYC has 8 million ppl plus - It can be a lonely place for many. One kind gesture can go a long way. Just for one moment, I forgot that.
