Confessions of a self-taught artist: I dont know the first thing - TopicsExpress

Confessions of a self-taught artist: I dont know the first thing about art in a technical sense. Vocabulary words like value, gradient, aerial, etc....uuummmmm I would have to look them up to teach anyone anything!! I do everything backwards, upside down, in the wrong order, and use methods that make zero sense. I picked up tips and tricks here and there by allowing my interest at the time to lead me. I was not a very good art student in high school, because I dont like being told what to do or how to do it. I happen to believe there are 50 different ways to do the same thing and teaching everyone the same way is too boxy for me. I always got an A, though, because the end product always provided the desired result. I also had perfect penmanship, but I held my pen..well, weird. They tried to change it in Kindergarten; I remember it being a huge deal that involved a meeting with my parents and everything. Since then it has naturally changed, but on my terms. The moral of the story? Sometimes coloring outside the lines can lead to something really amazing. Follow the rules where it matters, but use your creative license where it doesnt and see where it takes you. Thats what being creative is all about, after all. Dont listen to others when they tell you that youre doing it wrong if it works for you. Maybe youve just developed a new way that didnt exist before, and you are a pioneer!
