Confetti - all you need to know! #TraditionTuesday This week, by request, we are talking about the tradition of throwing #Confetti. Beloved by photographers, the confetti throwing originated in pagan times, when rice or sultanas were thrown at the bride and groom, to bless the couples fertility. Although rice is still sometimes used (and is a much more eco friendly alternative), it was overtaken by paper confetti... which any bride will tell you, finds its way EVERYWHERE ! Nowadays, biodegradable rice paper is often used, and flower petals. One of my brides last year had confetti made from petals from her grandparents garden - her nan had dried it all for her over the year. If you dont have the garden, or the inclination, you can buy beautiful confetti from Shropshire Petals, in any shade to match your wedding theme, or even a glorious mix. Flower girls today often have little baskets of petals to strew the way for the bride to walk on.... this dates back to ensuring the muddy path to a country church was dry and sweet smelling - often hay was used. If you are doing this, 2 things to think about - the age of the children, and get them to practise, otherwise, they either hang on to their confetti, or they dump it all out in one go at the start of the aisle! Secondly, DO check with your venue whether confetti is in fact allowed. Some venues have stamped it out because of the clear up - and who wants yesterdays wedding confetti at their own big day?! Another modern development is indoor confetti. One of my couples this year had a cannon which shot gold and silver streamer confetti over them just as they finished saying their vows - it looked spectacular! Do check out Flumpy Buttons on Facebook too - they do confetti to order of all hues and you can even get personalised confetti as table scatters Finally, cheap confetti may not be worthwhile - it often contains dye, so if it rains, you may find the colour runs onto your dress.... A lovely wedding idea - why not make a little confetti pouch to add to your Order of Service cards? Or cones to add to the back of your chair sashes ? You would need to check with your chair cover supplier if you are using pins....
