Confidence is increasing that East Arkansas will see a significant winter weather event in the form of an ice storm and it significant snowfall accumulation that may last a few days. Right now details are sketchy, but the timing will be from Thursday night across extreme northeast Arkansas around Corning, Piggott, Paragould....south to the I-40 corridor by Friday morning spreading to parts of southeast Arkansas by Friday night. The precip will likely begin as rain, changing to freezing rain, then sleet to snow as the cold air becomes more firmly entrenched and deeper in altitude. Right now Id think about having alternative plans for travel especially heading north or west from Memphis beginning Thursday. There may be a period between Thursday night and Sunday where travel will be highly inconvenient to dangerous due to snow and ice accumulations. If the freezing rain does lead to a full blown ice storm across parts of the area, power outages may become an issue. Not only that, arctic cold will have a firm grip on Arkansas by the weekend with highs likely not reaching freezing in some areas for 2-3 days. This storm is still a few days away and I will be updating this page accordingly as I analyze the data. Also, this page is set up to post watches, warnings and winter weather statements automatically from the National Weather Service in Memphis. Stay tuned for more updates. -DB
