Confirmed: Chairman of Couples Resorts in Negril, Westmoreland, Lee Issa has added his voice to the growing opposition against the approval by the NRCA and NEPA to the breakwater project. in an open letter released to the media, Mr. Issa expressed surprise that the approval was granted, and stated that the beach was not static and the area has gained and lost sand for over 40 years. The breakwater construction would be substantially irreversible yet as with all new and unproven structures would carry risk not least to the adjacent coral reef within the ‘protected’ marine park but also to unforeseen and unpredicted movements of the sand, Mr. Issa said. The Couples Resorts Chairman, has suggested that officials explore what methods are used in Cuba to protect their famous Varadero Beach, which he explained is Beach nourishment, Beach nourishment will give everyone in Long Bay a wide beach and buy us time to restore the damaged ecosystems. I am asking that NEPA and NRCA rethink their decision and do what is best for the environment as well as the Jamaican economy. he stated.
