Conflicted feelings about leaving Australia in a few hours. On one - TopicsExpress

Conflicted feelings about leaving Australia in a few hours. On one hand, its been great to have legitimate sidewalks, big enough roads (with licensed drivers), not have to dodge motorbikes, deal with bedbugs, worry about speaking the language, or not be able to drink the tap water. On the other hand, its been an expensive experience for something that feels a lot like home (a lot of oz feels just like the states). That said, for what Australia is known for, its great.. the reef, the wildlife, the beaches/surf, the bio-diversity, the cool accent, nice cities, etc - However, a lot of this was tainted by the general cost of things (i.e. $30+ a night for a hostel), the remarkably bad internet (really, really bad - that theyd often limit to 300mb, or set a timer to only 1 free hour) [as a note, wifi is particularly important to me - because Im helping sustain my travels through working remotely - so, its not just me complaining that youtube wont load, or whatever - this is a legitimate issue that severely impacted my ability to be effective], and, at times, the heat/humidity. Im not in love with australia - and to be honest, I dont know if Ill ever come back. I wouldnt mind coming back, but I also dont think Id go out of my way to come back here - if that makes sense. Its a great place, but once youve been, I dont think theres a ton of need to come back again. But that could be said for anything, anywhere. So, maybe different things for different people. Still, in the end, while I dont have any particular attachment to the place, I feel a little sad to leave it. But I think thats because it feels safe and comfortable - it feels normal. But alas, it cannot last... tomorrow I dive headfirst back into the world of unregulated motor vehicles (with seatbelts removed for aerodynamics), motorbikes, noise, peddling street vendors, and everything else that makes up SE Asia. Also, Im stoked for whats ahead. In exactly a month, I should be on a plane to Germany, and in the interim, Ill be hanging out in Thailand - sort of taking a break from constantly moving, etc. Feel free to drop on by :) Tomorrow/in a few hours: Gold Coast (0900) --> KL (1730) --> Phuket (like an hour later or something)... longest day/stretch of flying since the initial flight to asia. :|
