Cong okays first list of 45 contestants ‘Names will be announced within 2 days’ JK ASSEMBLY POLLS Congress high command has given green signal to the first list of 45 party candidates for upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls, scheduled for later this year. As per highly placed sources, the party state screening committee presented the list of 45 candidates, including all sitting assembly members, excluding MLA Surankote, Choudhary Muhammed Aslam, who passed away earlier this year, to the central screening committee at New Delhi yesterday. Sources informed that after discussing the proposed names, the central screening committee, headed by Ajay Maken, unanimously finalized the names forwarded by the state body. “The list includes the names of all 16 sitting legislators of the party, 12 from Jammu, three from Kashmir and one from Ladakh, besides two dozen names proposed for Kashmir region and 6 for Jammu region” sources added. Sources informed that the list of proposed party candidates have been forwarded to the Congress Parliamentary Board, headed by AICC president Sonia Gandhi, for final approval. They informed that after Parliamentary Board’s consent, the names of all 45 candidates are likely to be announced within next 2 days. Sources revealed that mandates finalized for six non-sitting MLAs from Jammu region include Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, brother of Congress Minister Aijaz Khan from Gulabgarh constituency. Former Minister, Mula Ram’s name has been finalized from Raipur Domana, Jugal Kishor Sharma from Reasi, Ashok Sharma from Kalakote, Girdhari Lal Chalotra from Hiranagar and Shiv Dev Singh from Nagrota constituency. In Kashmir region, Peer Bilal Ahmed is shortlisted for Sonawar and PCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz’s son, Salman Soz from Baramulla constituency, sources said and added that another candidate shortlisted for Kashmir is son of senior party leader Muhammad Muzaffar Parey. Besides this party will repeat all the sitting MLAs from the state including Raman Bhalla from Gandhi Nagar, Tara Chand from Chhamb, Sham Lal Sharma from Akhnoor, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma from Billawar, Aijaz Khan from Gool-Arnas, Krishan Chander Bhagat from Chenani, Abdul Majid Wani from Doda, Ghulam Muhammad Saroori from Inderwal, Muhammad Sarif Niaz from Bhaderwah, Waqar Rasool from Banihal, Ashok Kumar from Ramban and Shabir Khan from Rajouri in Jammu region. The sitting MLAs, Nawang Rigzin from Leh, Taj Mohi-ud-din from Uri, Ghulam Ahmad Mir from Doru and Peerzada Muhammad Syed from Kokernag in Kashmir division have also been finalized, sources added. The sources further informed that Congress party has decided not to field candidates from Khansahib, Kulgam and Gulmarg against Hakeem Muhammad Yasin of PDF, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami of CPI (M) and Ghulam Hassan Mir of JKDPN owing to the alliance. However, party is still indecisive over the Surankote seat of Rajouri district, which has fallen vacant after the death of former PCC chief and ex-Rajya Sabha member, Choudhary Muhammed Aslam.
