Congats on launching the project! We are on board here in East africa! One thing I wanted to raise as you move through the month is that is is really important to underscore that eating disorders (differentiated from disordered eating which affect 50 percent of western women at some point) are serious psychological illnesses (mental illnesses) that are bilogically based and have the highest rates of mortality, let alone morbidity, among all psychological illnesses. This is very important to note as EDs are not caused by family issues, or peer pressure or the like. Sure those things might spur the ED but the fundamental cause has to do with your biology and wiring. More and more research is being done to help understand exactly where the dysfunction is. Its important to not assert blame on external forces where they have little scientific validity. Eg lots of people are children of divorce or even severe abuse and dont get ED. This is also critical because as we speak there is need for parity in insurance. ED is often not covered because the insurance companies do not ascribe to ED as a mental illness. As I write CIGNA just declined claims for my daughters ED treatment. She is 12 and in phase 1 refeeding at home for anorexia. I am looking into this and am awaiting their response but fundamentally I shouldnt have to fight insurance. My girl has anorexia. She has to be fed 6x a day. She could die. My insurance, which costs over 800 a month should cover her sessions with our ED specialist. Thanks again for your great initiative! We shall send pictures!
