Congrats Again to the Revs!!!!!! FOXBOROUGH, Mass.-- Saer Sene struck from long range to give the New England Revolution an early lead and second-half substitute Dimitry Imbongo added a late insurance goal as the Revolution held off the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 before a crowd of 13,732 Saturday at steamy Gillette Stadium. Lee Nguyen assisted on both goals and the league-leading New England (6-5-6, 24 points) defense registered its tenth shutout in the season’s only meeting between the two sides. With a heat wave swamping the northeast, the game time temperature was 88 degrees as the Revolution took the field in its away whites to accommodate the black-clad visitors. Moments after Sene forced a two-fisted save from Jon Busch with a sizzler from the right, the golden-crested Frenchman popped up to the left of the arc, collected a short pass from Nguyen, and drilled a 25-yard rocket into the roof of the net over Busch’s left shoulder. For Sene, who led the Revolution last year with eleven goals before a season-ending knee injury, the 13th minute strike was his second tally of the 2013 campaign. The Revs kept up the attack against an undermanned San Jose (5-9-6, 21 points) side that was playing its third game in eight days and was missing Chris Wondolowski, Marvin Chavez, and Nana Attakora, all away on international duty, and Victor Bernardez, who remained on suspension. But despite producing eleven shots and playing most of the first half in the visitors’ end, New England couldn’t add to the lead. Nguyen fizzed a blast from the edge of the penalty area that Busch battled away, Diego Fagundez worked a combination with Chad Barrett that ended with the ball rolling across the six-yard box just beyond the teenager’s reach, and a well-timed Barrett run produced a cross to the far post that again narrowly eluded Fagundez. Busch kept the visitors close in the 34th minute, throwing out his right foot at close range to deny Andrew Farrell his first professional goal after the rookie was set up by Kelyn Rowe on a slick give-and-go. The contest was more evenly balanced in the second half. Adam Jahn flubbed an open San Jose opportunity from eight yards after Shea Salinas beat Farrell to the end line, and two minutes later, Rowe sprung Nguyen down the right sideline in the 78th minute and Imbongo drove the ensuing cross past Busch with a short-range half-volley for the Congolese striker’s second goal of the year. Imbongo nearly added another tally two minutes later with a point-blank header off a Rowe cross, but Busch was able to close off the effort at the far post. With Juan Agudelo sidelined with a right knee sprain and Jerry Bengtson mired in a season-long slump, Revolution head coach Jay Heaps turned to Barrett for his second start of the campaign. The burly nine-year veteran had earned the privilege after entering as a late substitute for Bengtson against Chivas USA one week ago and scoring the equalizer in a 1-1 draw, getting on the end of an 88th minute Fagundez cross after a hard run to the far post. Barrett also brought the distinction of four career goals against San Jose, three more than any other active New England player. Two Revolution rookies returned to the starting line-up. Farrell returned to right back after serving a one-game suspension, and Scott Caldwell made his eighth start of the season after yielding to the holding midfield role Clyde Simms at the StubHub Center.
