Congrats to Matt Barrett, our October Member of the Month! Make sure to congratulate him for all his hard work and the 65 pounds he has lost! Matt is quickly becoming a beast in the gym and hes only going to keep getting stronger and faster! Nice work Matt, keep doing work! Name: Matt Barrett When did you start CrossFit: First week of August 2014 Favorite WOD: Anything with Cleans, box jumps, jump rope, rowing and squats. Least Favorite WOD: Wods that include RUNNING, BURPEES or SQUAT SNATCHES…UGH How did you get started at Ocean State CrossFit? Late July I decided I no longer wanted to be out of shape and overweight. I have a couple friends who I work with that were already attending classes as OSCF. I saw rapid results and wanted to join in on the fun. They convinced me to give it a go and I finally decided it was time after stepping on a scale and seeing how much weight I had gained. Tell us about your first CrossFit experience: My first experience was painfully awful. I made it less than 4 minutes into an 8 minute onramp WOD, could barely make it 100 meters without wanting to pass out and eventually Ray made me sit the remainder of the workout because I was not going to make it and was as pale as a ghost. At the end of the class he looked right at me and said I BETTER SEE YOU WEDNESDAY! Sure enough he saw me every on ramp class and many WODS later. What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since you started at OSCF? I would say at this point in time I am fitter than I have ever been. Even more than I was in HS when doing sports consistently, I find myself to be in better shape now, have more endurance and I am far stronger than I have ever been. I have lost roughly 70 lbs since I started coming to OSCF while keeping a very strict diet and hitting classes 5 days a week. I also try to run before and after WODS to help with endurance and to curb my hate for running. What is your favorite part of OSCF? The atmosphere, the coaches, as well as how outgoing everyone is to encourage you to be better and work harder. I have tried working out in gym’s before but always got bored going alone or didn’t really know what I was doing. OSCF takes care of all of this far beyond my expectations. What advice would you have for someone just starting CrossFit? It is purely mental. Anyone can do it, everything is scalable and just remember when you think that you aren’t going to make it, push through it because you definitely can. What do you do outside of CrossFit? Love New England sports, Pats, Celtics, Bruins, Sox so I try to watch/attend as many sporting events as possible. I have an indoor basketball court at my apartment so I try to shoot around as often as I can. I watch tons of TV, I love me a good TV series. Video games, but that is limited because it aids in being lazy haha, and just about anything that involves being social.
