Congratulations John Bradshaw for winning our Gems of Day competition! The correct answer is Kornerupine. You nailed both stone name and origin (Tanzania). Kornerupine is a strongly pleochroic rare boro-silicate mineral that usually appears brown or brownish green. Occasional highly saturated green or blue stones from East Africa have been unearthed, but very few are clean in sizes over 1/2 carat. The beautiful colors of this Kornerupine are probably related to the presence of chromium or vanadium. Because of the size, the color, and the clarity, this is the nicest Kornerupine we ever came across. With a hardness of 7 and no significant cleavage, kornerupine is hard enough to be used in most kinds of jewelry, but it will never be popular due to its rarity. This stone is GIA certified and is now for sale.
