Congratulations go to Jeremy Scahill! His film, Dirty Wars, just got nominated for an Oscar -- and believe me (in case you havent seen it yet), that is one deserved nomination! Tom Say what you will about the Academy Awards (“They’re a joke,” or, “They’re rigged,” for instance), but at least they got a few big nominations correct this year. Most notably, journalist Jeremy Scahill received an Oscar nod for his feature-length documentary Dirty Wars. The film was based on Scahill’s book, Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield, and follows him as he travels to various Middle Eastern countries investigating the aftermath of several United States military operations that left civilians dead. Thus far, Dirty Wars has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, especially for its peeling back the curtain on the government’s cover-up of civilian deaths and the assassination of American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki. Throughout the film, Scahill interviews CIA agents, military generals, and warlords supported by the United States. mediaite/tv/jeremy-scahills-dirty-wars-nominated-for-best-documentary-oscar/ To read the epilogue to his book Dirty Wars at TomDispatch, go here: tomdispatch/blog/175766/
