The Student Volunteer Scholarship program, now in its 12th year, recognizes student education and the importance of volunteering, while encouraging young people to become involved in history. Society Director and CEO Steve Elliott, presented the students with an award of $1,000 each at the recent Executive Council meeting. The students complete an application and submit an essay and letters of recommendation. A selection committee comprised of a staff person and both Society and non-Society volunteers makes the final decisions. McDonald graduated this spring from Champlin Park High School. He became a Society volunteer in March 2011 and contributed more than 114 hours of volunteer service. He volunteered at the History Center by helping with ticketing and coat check, working many volunteer shifts with his dad. McDonald said, “I learned many great things about history while volunteering for the Society. One thing in particular that stood out to me was the amazing amount of detail that goes into creating the Greatest Generation exhibit. It surprised me because it provided new perspectives from the home front as well as the battlefield and gave a new outlook on the people who lived during that era.” He plans to attend the University of Minnesota, Morris to pursue a political science and pre-law education. The Minnesota Historical Society is a non-profit educational and cultural institution established in 1849. The Society collects, preserves and tells the story of Minnesota’s past through museum exhibits, libraries and collections, historic sites, educational programs and book publishing. Using the power of history to transform lives, the Society preserves our past, shares our state’s stories and connects people with history.
