Congratulations to Coronado Track and Field Rotary Champions nominee, Derek Gorthy! Derek was selected from over 400 of the area’s best and brightest student athletes for the distinguished Ian Weikel Champion of Service Award! Derek was chosen from this field of outstanding Pikes Peak area high school students based on his athletic, academic and service achievements at Coronado High School. Derek is the first Coronado student to win this award. The Ian Weikel Award is named for the 2003 Rotary Champions Medallion winner, who was killed in 2005 while serving in Iraq. Ian was a graduate of Fountain Ft. Carson and was the son of former Coronado English teacher, Beth Weikel. The Ian Weikel Champion of Service Award is given to the student that most exemplifies the spirit of community service. The recipient of this prestigious award is given the opportunity to direct a $1,000 cash donation to the local charity of his choice in honor of Ian. This cash award is made possible by the Pikes Peak Area Rotary Endowment.
