Congratulations to Cranfield PhD alumnus, Dr Alissa Cotton, who has been awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Energy Sector PhD Thesis Award 2013 for her thesis ‘Engineering scale-up and environmental effects of the calcium looping cycle for post-combustion CO2 capture’ which she carried out at Cranfield under the supervision of Dr Kumar Patchigolla and Professor John Oakey. Alissa explored the separation of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion flue gas on a pilot-scale reactor, and demonstrated techniques to improve CO2 capture from 40% to almost 80% in a fluidised bed reactor. The results contribute to developing carbon capture and storage technology to allow new fossil fuel power plants to operate in accordance with 2010 EU regulations.
