Congratulations to Huberte Gautreau, one of the Coalitions pioneers, who received this morning a 25th Anniversary Pin from the YMCA of the Greater Moncton. The Pin recognizes past Peace Medallion recipients for their peace-building efforts. HUBERTES BIO: Originally from Pre d’en Haut and now living in Moncton, Huberte Gautreau has been a devoted advocate in the arena of social justice. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in public health, she has made a career of aiding those in need. In the 1970s, her passion took her to the African country of The Congo – then Zaire – where she worked with the World Health Organization, doing everything from helping to reorganize a hospital emergency room and complete a cross-country survey of health needs to teaching public health to mothers. In the late 1980s, she ventured to Togo to work on a water project with CUSO. In the 1990s, Huberte found herself in Peru, working to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer among women. Most recently she was in Cameroon, advocating against gender discrimination. Closer to home, Huberte worked as a professor at l’Université de Moncton’s nursing school and was also involved with other initiatives at the university, including one that promoted awareness of international solidarity. She also co-founded Crossroads for Women and was a key organizer in the 2000 World March of Women. Since her retirement, Huberte continues to dedicate much of her time to fighting for pay equity in New Brunswick as a member of the Pay Equity Coalition. Huberte has received the New Brunswick Human Rights Award as well as the Governor Generals Award in commemoration of the Persons Case. She received the YMCA Peace Medallion in 1995.
