Congratulations to Malcolm Shephard and Tim Whitehouse who won the final of the CWS Warwickshire Pairs held yesterday at North Warwickshire Golf Club. The match was a four ball, better ball Stableford against Moor Hall Golf Club and our Harborne duo fought hard to win the trophy which was presented by the President of Warwickshire Golf Union, Mr Graham Hayes. The Warwickshire website had this to say about the competition. Sunday 22nd June 2014 - North Warks GC - To end an 18 month undefeated streak takes a good team, nay a very good team, and in this years CMS KO Final, the four players involved had already won the CMS Strokeplay trophies, an one the Warwickshire Seniors. The 18 month win record belonged to Martyn Parfect and Alan Saul, two of Moor Halls stalwart members and having taken both the Jack Urry Cup and the Vice Presidents Bowl (Weve only been out of the Top 3 on a couple of occasions), they were determined opposition for Harbornes Malcolm Shephard and Tim Whitehouse. Ive been playing with Malcolm for maybe five years - no one else will - I supposed Im doing my bit for Community Spirit, laughed Tim, Captain of Harborne in 2011. Three years in a row Malcolm had his name on the winners card for the Warwickshire Seniors - as the marker. The year following (the Unions Centenary) he finally was the player as he took the title with his formidable swing and indomitable spirit. Three months later he was having his knee replaced, only to wake from the operation to be told by the Consultant that he would never walk around a golf course again, He played today using a buggy and his handicap is now 9 instead of 2. There were some cracking long drives from Alan but it was Moor Hall who lead after 9 - 1up. They lost the 10th but grabbed the 11th with a Shepherd birdie and took the 13th with a par five. Only Malcolm found the par three 14th green but he three putted and Saul played a sumptuous chip and run from right of the green to grab back a hole. The Moor Hall pairing only had to play two tee shots on the next as both Harborne drives were lost so it was on to the last three. the first three tees shots were all left and short. Shephard went for the flag and was in the greenside bunker. A Harborne par and they were one up with two to play. Shephard played a great chip having flown through the 17th with his approach but it had a very firm first bounce so his par putt was 6ft instead of three. His putt was for the trophy but drifted across the hole. They did have a second chance on the 18th and took it with a birdie three - This feels great having gone out in the semis last year, said Tim having been presented with the trophy by Warwickshire Union President Graham Hayes. There was a winners glint in the eye of Shephard
