Congratulations to Mark Reckless on successfully defending his seat and for doing what Douglas Carswell did by resigning to fight a by-election after defecting from the Conservatives to UKIP. I hope they have set an honourable trend for politicians who switch political parties. I suspect every incumbent MP could successfully defend their seat if they defected to UKIP and fought a by-election given the current mood of the country. The political earthquake will be a UKIP win with a candidate who isnt the sitting MP. I digress, I thought Mark’s victory speech was very revealing. Having given the Coalition’s failure to reduce the deficit faster as one of his reasons for joining UKIP one was left with the possibility it could mean UKIP favoured higher taxes, spending cuts, or both to reduce the deficit, but in his speech last night the second reason Mark gave for people to join UKIP was to cut taxes. So there we have it, UKIP wants to cut the deficit and cut taxes and that can only mean cuts to public spending on a scale even the Tories dared not suggest in Coalition and the Liberal Democrats would never have agreed to in Coalition. UKIP really is the Party right-wing Tories wish the Conservative Party would be, which is why only right-wing Tory MPs are defecting to it.
