Congratulations to Michael Sam, the Missouri Tiger and SEC co-defensive player of the year, for being drafted into the NFL this weekend. Mr. Sam is the first openly gay football player to be drafted. It is a big deal and symbolic of the great changes taking place in the country with respect to tolerance and acceptance of diversity. A gay man being drafted, meaning he is at the very least a good ballplayer, into the NFL. The National Football League, to many, represents historically all that is machismo and tough, the very epitome of manhood in our country. It is a big deal. There are some on sport chat lines complaining of the attention the media paid this story or of a liberal agenda. If the celebration of this story offends your sensibilities, it may be time for a new pair of glasses.
