Congratulations to MurphtheSurf3 for climbing back up to the top for the week of December 15th-21st, 2014. Murph is a regular on Yabberz and so many readers have learned from his well articulated writing pieces this year. Below is a message from Murph: Many years ago I got the follow advice about how to debate. They have stood me in good stead over the years as both student and teacher. My hope is that principles like these come to represent how we discuss together here at Yabberz. *Develop a Controlling Idea, your Thesis. Build your case using evidence from sources with strong reputations for good research. Stand ready to defend those sources. *Present the content accurately. Only use content that is pertinent to your point of view and draw on support from authoritative sources. *Use logic to make your arguments. Present these arguments clearly and concisely. *Questions or challenges should be professionally stated. Insulting, condescending comments or those involving personal language or attacks are unacceptable. *Critical analysis, synthesis, rhetorical skill, and wit are keys to debate success. *Be clear on the opposing sides position or argument. Knowing the other side is critical for preparing strategies to refute your opponents arguments. *Know the common errors in thinking like logical fallacies so that you avoid them and use them effectively in your refutation. *Be certain of the validity of all external evidence presented for your arguments. Also, challenges to the validity of evidence should be made only on substantive grounds. *Your rebuttal (or conclusion) in a debate is your final summary position. Use it as an opportunity to highlight important issues that indicate proof of your points or refute your opponents argument. Its how I try to operate....not always with complete success.....but it is my goal. Thanks to all who supported my thinking in the last week. The more of us who weigh in, the better the site will be. A Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays to all. Peace and Joy. Murph Many Cheers to you too Murph! Congratulations again.
