Congratulations to Samantha Wilhoit, a senior at South Ripley High School, who was recently presented with a Purdue College of Technology scholarship for $1,000 funded by the Community Education Coalition of Columbus! In partnership with the Community Education Coalition, three higher education institutions opened their doors for a fall education and career festival showcasing how their associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs prepare graduates for rewarding careers with top regional employers. Companies such as Cummins Inc., Faurecia, Honda, Aisin, Columbus Regional Hospital and more participated in this unique on-site networking opportunity to share with students and parents the types of jobs available within their corporation and the types of skills, education and training needed to land a career. The six $1,000 Community EdFest scholarships, good toward classes at IUPUC, Ivy Tech Columbus and Purdue College of Technology in Columbus, are set up to benefit any first-time student with an interest in careers that drive the economies of Southeast Indiana, such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare and tourism. Applicants for the scholarship are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, and community involvement. In the fall of 2014, Samantha plans to major in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Purdue College of Technology in Columbus. Wilhoit excels in leadership and community involvement. Among her many qualifications for this scholarship, Wilhoit serves as the South Ripley High School Dream It. Do It. (pro-advanced manufacturing career awareness initiative) Student Ambassador, basketball team captain, varsity cheerleader, Project Lead The Way (pre-engineering curriculum), The Engineering Academy at Southeastern Career Center, Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, and placed second in the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Shoot in Friendship.
