Congratulations to Sustainable Northwest! Sustainable Northwest is very pleased to announce we were awarded a $64,990 USDA Rural Development Rural Business Enterprise Grant to determine the structural characteristics and properties of Western Juniper. Western Juniper has never before been tested through an official grading and certification process, and this study will result in a “stamp of approval” that juniper has been verified by industry professionals for safety and standard usage. We are confident that certification will provide market credibility and will lead to growth in the Western Juniper industry, creating and retaining jobs in eastern Oregon. Western Juniper is a native species, but a century of fire suppression, grazing practices, and climate change have led to excess proliferation. The tree needs to be carefully thinned to improve grazing conditions, discourage the spread of invasive weeds, increase water supplies, decrease wildfire risks in communities, and restore habitat for sensitive species like sage grouse and mule deer. youtu.be/niUUc3Z_Wnw
