Congratulations to all the Detroit public employees who fought for a much better retirement deal than most folks thought they would get! I was criticized for saying in Metro Times Detroit that it was unconscionable for the city to make retirees pay for the mistakes of city leaders. (I also noted that I was hoping against hope that my retired cop dad wouldnt show up, decimated pension check in hand, asking if he could crash in my basement for the next decade or so.) Now Im wondering how some of the folks who covered this story, and who could easily be mistaken for house organs over the past year, feel about where things stand. After all, anyone who has served on a bargaining team knows three things: Every position is extreme; Negotiations can be hairier than Optimus Prime and Megatron playing chicken; And no more movement is possible, no one can give another millimeter, until the very end -- when EVERYTHING is possible and theres always room to be had to make a deal.
