Congratulations to all the Park Hill School District students who earned top awards at the JEA-NSPA National High School Journalism Convention! They competed against more than 1,600 students from across the country. Park Hill South senior Derek Braun earned first place for his newspaper page-one design at the National NSPA/Adobe Design of the Year competition. He also placed fifth in the nation in the NSPA Illustration of the Year contest. Park Hill South’s “South Side Scoop” won the Pacemaker Award, NSPA’s highest honor, for best daily newscast. The student staff that created the winning show last year included junior Brittany Coffey, senior McKade Hermansen, junior Connor Hills, senior Joey Panella, senior Slone Kays and graduates Spenser Braymer, Seth Cline, Courtney Coyle, Austin Dorrell, Emma Frazier, Evan Jones, Daniel Kerwin, Savannah Kutz, Sara Marselli, Rachel McMillan, Hunter Norton, Zac Ricketts, Skylar Rolstad and Rachel Schisler. Park Hill High School senior Rylee Stoulil received a superior rating in the newswriting category. PHHS graduate Paxton DiBlasi received fourth place in the feature story of the year category for “Amy’s Army,” and Park Hill South graduates Savannah Kutz and Tess Jordan received fourth place in the news story of the year category for “Leaving the Scene of an Accident.” The 2013 Park Hill South “South Paw” yearbook placed eighth in the Best in Show category of yearbooks with 225-274 pages. Park Hill South High School students who received an excellent rating in their categories were Erin Stump, junior, newspaper newswriting; Hatty Campbell, senior, newspaper editorial writing; and Gabby Kessler, senior, yearbook academics writing. Park Hill High School senior Derek Baker earned an excellent rating in yearbook clubs copy and captions. The honorable mentions from Park Hill South were Megan McMullen, senior, newspaper feature writing; CJ Whisnant, senior, newspaper sports writing; Katie Blechinger, senior, newsmagazine design; Kyle Vanice, junior, yearbook theme design; Breanna Webster, senior, yearbook clubs writing; Rachel Schisler and Tess Jordan, graduates, news story of the year; and Rachel McMillan, Rachel Schisler and Emma Frazier, graduates, feature story of the year. The honorable mentions from Park Hill High School were Beth Cooper, senior, newsmagazine layout; Shannon Barry, senior, online news package; Zoe Butler, senior, online news package; Madison Pehlman, junior, first year photo; Molly Weis, senior, online news package; and Jordan Elder, sophomore, news story of the year. The Park Hill South publications advisor is Megan Palmer, and the Park Hill High School publications advisor is Sally Beran. Justin Ford is the broadcast journalism teacher for both high schools.
