Congratulations to all the nominees for the LPSC Australia Day Awards 2015. All the nominees and category winners will be recognised at the LPSC Australia Day Awards Ceremony at the Royal Theatre Quirindi from 9.30am 26-01-15. You are cordially invited to attend this ceremony. Nominations - Liverpool Plains Shire Council 2015 Australia Day Awards – in alphabetical order with nominations highlighted - Audrey Armstrong (Citizen of Year / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Audrey has served as curator for Quirindi and District Historical Society for the past decade and beyond. Audrey has been responsible for displays and is well known as a seamstress adding to the displays her great talents. Her efforts are a credit to all as a Senior Citizen. Cyril Barwick (Local Legend) - Cyril still lives on his own in Willow Tree at 98 and drives a car. Cyril is a modest man with a big history. He saw active service in the Middle East and New Guinea before farming in Warrah. But his real love was Tennis. He was a top A-grade player winning many tennis awards. His passion for tennis showed in him coaching many children free of charge, and he was instrumental in doing up abandoned tennis courts. Cyril, a bachelor all his life, travelled extensively to see the world and Australia, and he certainly has some stories to tell! Brock Beresford (Sportsperson of the Year) - Brock is an outstanding sportsperson in our community who for many years been an exemplary advocate and role model for sport in the Liverpool Plains Shire and beyond. He has proven that with perseverance, dedication and resilience coupled with a strong sense of fairness and sportsmanship, no bar is too high. Marie Blundell (Local Legend / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Marie has been treasurer for Quirindi CWA for over 10 years. Her efforts in raising funds for the CWA to provide a variety of programs for the frail aged and those with disabilities are tremendous. Several trash and treasure stalls are held within the year providing valuable funds rather than such items sent to landfill. Sam Carter (Sportsperson of the Year) – Sam began his rugby career at the Quirindi Lions at the humble age of 8 and has progressed through the ranks to represent Australia making his debut in June 2014. Sam had an outstanding year taking out the ACT Brumbies “Forward of the Year” award and the Australian Rugby Union’s Rookie of the Year Award. Nathan Clark (Junior Sportsperson of Year) - Nathan Clark played soccer for six years, has been a member of the Werris Creek Swimming Club for three years, represented Northern Junior League for two years and has been playing basketball for 2 years. It has been 2014 where Nathan has found his niche in Athletics, Swimming and Basketball but his great love is Basketball. Lucy Crane (Young Citizen of Year) - Lucy has supported local initiatives to lift the profile of culture and the arts in the Quirindi district such as the Joan Carpenter Award and Quirindi’s Got Talent. Lucy willingly and competently donates her time and talents to community service events, singing the National anthem at the Australia Day Awards, the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and Remembrance Day services. Lucy is a talented community minded young lady who is a wonderful ambassador for the youth of the Liverpool Plains Shire Council. Peter Cunningham (Citizen of the Year) – Peter has been a valued member of Werris Creek for many years. He has been associated with the Werris Creek Rugby League Club, Bowling and Tennis Club, Australian Railway Museum and the Werris Creek Development Committee. Most recently Peter was an integral part in the initiating and then establishing the Werris Creek Community Shed. The Werris creek community is grateful for Peter’s vision, leadership, determination and tenacity in everything that he does. 51st Currabubula Red Cross Art Show (Community Event of the Year) – The Currabubula Red Cross Art Show provides an incomparable opportunity for local exposure to arts and culture, an outlet for local artistic endeavour and a sense of community. There is terrific economic and social benefit to the region and a sense of putting Currabubula on the map from this event. Marilyn Deeks (Citizen of Year / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Marilyn is a valuable member of the Werris Creek Library and nothing is too much trouble to her. She is also a very dedicated member of the Werris Creek Lions Club and is always willing to help out at BBQ’s and other events that are held in the Werris Creek community. First Fleet Descendants Reunion Picnic (Community Event of Year) - The First Fleet Descendants Reunion Picnic was organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary since Captain Arthur Phillips death. The event attracted over 300 people on the day and was held at the First fleet Gardens in Wallabadah. It generated over $10,000 in tourism for the region as the majority of the visitors were from outside of the Liverpool Plains area. Elizabeth Gallagher (Marie Maunder Community Service Award) - Elizabeth has been involved with a number of community groups for a number of years and is a true gem. Last year she wrote and directed a very successful play called “Zinderella of Warranella”, a timeless fairy tale with a local twist, showcasing the local community and their talents. Elizabeth has been teaching scripture for 40 years, well deserving the Papal Blessing she was bestowed! Elizabeth is tireless in her volunteering and community spirit and nobody knows what she comes up with next! Bill Gleeson (Citizen of Year / Local Legend / Marie Maunder) - Bill has worked tirelessly for 45 years maintaining the building known as Borambil Community Hall. He has shown a great commitment to the cause as a trustee. Shirley Goodwin (Local Legend) - Shirley has been a very valued member of this community for more than 40 years. She was principal and teacher at the Quirindi Public School for many years. A very supportive member of the Quirindi Rotary Club and has held numerous positions in the Probus Club. Rex Heiler (Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Rex is a valued volunteer of the Werris Creek Railway Museum and has been involved with the restoration of the Werris Creek Cemetery. When his neighbour was diagnosed with terminal cancer Rex drove him to medical appointments, got his prescriptions filled and anything else that was needed. Rex willingly puts his hand up to assist any organisation or person needing a hand. Adam Hitchen (Marie Maunder Community Service Award) – Adam is an active member of the Quirindi RSL Golf Club and conceived the idea of building a Putt Putt Course and with the help of fellow members was responsible for its construction. He has also been responsible for the construction of 2 BBQ areas to enhance the use of the Golf Club. Adam’s tireless work in creating a wonderful facility for our youth and the encouragement of Junior Golf in Quirindi is priceless in its value to the community. Lachlan Holz (Junior Sportsperson of Year) - During 2014 Lachlan has been a great sporting ambassador for Quirindi and Quirindi Polocrosse Club, representing polocrosse at State and National level. Lachlan was selected in the NSW Junior Boys Polocrosse team, received the awards for champion horse and rider at the NSW Club Championships as well as the Champion Australian Stockhorse award. At Nationals in Darwin Lachlan and his team took out the national title. Mr Ray & Mrs Jill Hoswell (Citizen of Year / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Ray and Jill have been nominated for their countless hours spent developing and maintaining the Quirindi Rural Heritage Village. Jill works tirelessly as Museum Co-ordinator, maintaining the museum to perfection. Ray works with the miniature railway and men’s shed and is presently vice president of the association. Dominic Keir (Sportsperson of the Year) – In early 2011, Dominic approached the Quirindi Junior Club looking for assistance in reforming the defunct Quirindi Senior Soccer Club. Dom’s determination allowed him to scrape together a team in 2011 and form the new Quirindi Football Club. The team reached the Semi Finals in their first year but then had a complete turn around and received the wooden spoon in 2012. Dom continued to build the club and more new players coming on board in 2013 resulted in Qurindi’s first Grand Final appearance. 2014 resulted in major progressions with QFC Fielding a first and reserve grade team and securing two home games for the first time in Quirindi’s history. Dominic leads by example on and off the field and QFC is only looking for further progression in the 2015 season under Dominic’s guidance. Pam Lane (Citizen of Year) - Pam works quietly in the background of all the Australia Day functions. Catering is something she truly enjoys. Her work with the Quirindi Girl Guides has always been done in an efficient manner and her career as a carer is appreciated by everyone. Pam is strong in her support for the community and always works tirelessly in the background in everything she does. Margaret Lobsey (Citizen of Year / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Margaret Lobsey has been nominated because of her wholehearted cheerfulness and commitment to Quirindi and surrounding districts. She has been involved with the Presbyterian/Uniting Church as a Sunday school teacher and then on the church council. She has been the chairperson of the Christian bookshop since its inception and is heavily involved in the day to day running of it. She has been a member of the Wallabadah School P & C, has been a Brownie Guide Leader and was also involved in the Wallabadah Scouts. Margaret is an active member of the Wallabadah Hall committee and was among a group of people that built the Wallabadah Tennis Courts. Margaret has been a member of the Wallabadah Red Cross since 1975 holding several executive positions in that time as well as presently being a member of both Rotary and Probus Clubs. Meg Rowarth (Marie Maunder Community Service Award) – Meg is a tireless worker teaching craft and cooking with residents of Eloura Retirement Home every week. Meg has shown a great commitment to the Frail Aged by giving her time and talent on a weekly basis which is no mean task. Communication is so important. Keith Moore (Citizen of Year / Local Legend / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Keith is a well-respected member of Werris Creek who owned and operated the Kiora café with his wife Maree for many years. He has always been actively involved with the Golf Club and still plays when able and participates with the travelling golfers. Keith is currently the President of the Men’s Bowls in Werris Creek and a representative to the Bowls District Council. Keith has been involved in many committees including being involved in the direction of the old hospital and the implementation of the current multi-purpose centre. Keith was a member of the Werris Creek Fire Brigade for a number of years and currently Keith is a volunteer for the HACC as a bus driver taking the ladies shopping on a Friday. Kerry-Ann Nelson (Citizen of Year) - Kerry-Ann has been very active in the Quirindi community in raising awareness to suicide prevention by organising two free workshops in suicide prevention in the community. At Christmas Kerry-Ann has also organised giving trees to local needy families. Kerry-Ann is a very humble, giving person who shies away from the limelight but has done so much to make the lives of many people more liveable. Quirindi Canter Fun Run (Community Event of Year) - The Quirindi Canter Fun Run is a community day consisting of a 10km and 5km competitive run, community walk, dash for cash events, team relay events, market stalls and more. This event brings people from far and wide to enjoy this event including Tamworth, Armidale and Sydney and in 2014 there was even a competitor form Japan. This event raises money for the charity Youngcare as well as providing a much needed donation to young people of the Liverpool Plains Shire with full time care needs. Quirindi Conversations - A Rotary Initiative (Community Event of Year) - Quirindi Conversations was an initiative of the Quirindi Rotary Club to highlight and celebrate the exceptional talents and achievements of people from the Liverpool Plains. With outstanding support from the local community, Conversations was able to highlight the lives, successes, failures, dreams and future hopes of the 4 guests while providing entertainment to the entire audience. Local talents Cara Bastian and Lucy Crane showcased the wonderful musical talent nurtured and developed in our community. Dawn Ryman (Citizen of Year / Marie Maunder Community Services Award) - Dawn has served as President of the Arts and Craft shop for several years. Her commitment to the business as a volunteer is exceptional. Her talents with cooking and handcrafts have proven to be a valuable asset to the shop and fundraising for the Eloura Auxiliary which supports residents at the centre. Zinderella of Warranella (Community Event of the Year) – Zinderella of Warranella was a local production written by Warrah Creek local Elizabeth Gallagher and featured a cast of local talent. There were a total of 15 people in the play as well as school children and was a great event which sold out the first show resulting in a 2nd show being put on as well. All funds stayed locally to assist the Willow Tree Primary School and Warrah Creek Hall Committee.
