Congratulations to all who were nominated and recognised at the Waverley Council Local Hero Awards. The 2014 Local Hero of the Year, Joan Heather Johnson AM had a distinguished 34 year career as a registered nurse, and has provided over 30 years of community service through not-for-profit organisations such as Waverley and Woollahra Community and Seniors Centre Associations, Australian Council the Ageing, NSW Nurses Assocation, Sydney Town Hall volunteers amongst many more. I would also like to congratulate and thank the 2014 Young Local Hero, Liron Smith, aged 13, who volunteers his time through Kids Giving Back’s program Cook for Good – which creates meals for homeless shelters including Wayside Café and Rough Edges. Liron is a local resident of North Bondi, and he attended the awards ceremony with his mother, Andi. I also commend local Vaucluse resident Ruth Tofler-Riesel, who received a highly commended award for her work with Kids Giving Back – a foundation she helped to co-found with fellow local resident Carole Schlessinger. Kids Giving Back is a local not-for-profit organisation that encourages students to improve their local community by volunteering their time and services. Also, receiving a highly commended award for 26 years of ongoing service as Chairman for North Bondi Precinct, Peter Quartly, who has gone above and beyond for our community. Congratulations again to our local heroes, and thank you for your contributions to our community. Thank you to Waverley Council and Mayor Sally Betts for organising this fantastic event.
