Congratulations to @altarbridal on their new location in Leawood, Kansas! Altar Bridal was the very first store to start carrying the heidi elnora line in 2010. We caught up with the shop owner, Dede about why she chose the bridal industry and more! How long have you been in business? I’ve been in the business 4 years Why did you choose the bridal industry? I chose the bridal industry because I knew it was something that I would never tire of and truly loved. I have always had a general love for weddings (not just the reception). There is something about two people committing themselves to each other in such a ceremonial way. And of course the best part of a wedding for me is seeing the bride for the first time walking down the aisle and seeing her in her gown. I always get chills and tear up a bit. Where did you meet your husband/fiancé? We actually meet at church camp 10 years before we were married. There was no chemistry then but my cousin sure had the hots for him! Apparently he was known among her circle of friends as “church camp Ben”. It wasn’t until 8 years later when a mission trip that my mom signed up for brought us together again (he grew up a missionary kid). And after that first chance encounter with each other after 8 years – the rest is history and a great love story! What is your favorite heidi elnora gown? That’s tough a question, because I love the new collection, but I would say Mary Cerella. It’s a little bit of fun & funky, but still a classic look. And one of the first gowns in our store when we opened 4 years ago. A bride once said “this gown just feels like home when I’m in it.” Loved that. What is your favorite moment with the bride? I would say that it is that moment when I am able to make a personal connection with her during the appointment. It completely changes the mood of the appointment because I feel like I can get a better read on her personality, likes and dislikes, which is so helpful when trying to help her find the perfect gown for her big day. What is the one thing you can’t live without? My hubby. He is truly my BFF and life without him would be super boring. Or a calculator. Did I mention I’m a recovering CPA? How long have you been an employee of Altar? I opened Altar June 1, 2010 – still hangin’ in there. If there was a movie about you, who would play you and why? I’m going to go with Tina Fey. I like to think other people find me approachable, funny, and down to earth – which is how I see her. Whether that is really true about either of us, I guess I’m not entirely sure! What makes your store different from the rest? This is a tough question as a business owner, because at the end of the day, all the other bridal shops in my area say many of the same things I would say about my store. So to be honest, I think what makes us different varies from bride to bride and what she connected with when walking into the store and choosing to buy her gown from us vs. another store. We do hear from many brides, some that buy and some that didn’t, that we hands down provide the best experience in town. We also love that only one collection we carry is in another store in the city. All other lines are exclusive to us. We also have a variety of local designers represented in our store, which is super fun. And lastly, we will do just about anything, within reason, to keep our brides happy, stress-free, and wanting to refer everyone they know to us! If you could sum up the experience that your brides have with you in one word what would it be? Unforgettable.
