Congratulations to cocoa producers from Malekula, Epi and Santo islands who participated in the first annual Vanuatu chocolate competition. The Australian High Commissioner, Jeremy Bruer, joined Vanuatu’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries, and Biosecurity, David Tosul, to support ni-Vanuatu farmers’ efforts to produce fine chocolate. Organised by the ACTIV Association in partnership with the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research, ten producers provided cocoa beans that were judged by team of experts, including leading Australian chocolate-makers Haigh’s and Bahen & Co, as well as experts from Lapita Café, The Australian newspaper and Salon Culinaire. The chocolate industry has the potential to generate employment and create economic opportunities in Vanuatu’s islands, both of which are key objectives of Australia’s aid program.
