Congratulations to grassroots non government organisation FRIEND for its work in the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural communities in Fiji! The EU has provided project support to FRIEND to the tune of €2.8m (F$6.7m) since 2011. FRIEND has successfully been able to implement its activities within designated timeframes and has in some instances, even surpassed project targets. In spite of Fijis good economic prospects, poverty remains a major challenge in rural areas, including in the sugar belt. The work of FRIEND has proved to be very important in reducing poverty in these areas, Ambassador Andrew Jacobs, Head of the Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific said. Speaking at a FRIEND awards ceremony today he said: Our support to FRIEND has enabled the training of 500 farmers in techniques to produce cash crops as well as in beekeeping. Farmers have also been trained in poultry production and have received start up resources. In addition, 100 young people have received training and work experience placements under the YEN or Youth Employment Network scheme. The FRIEND GROW programme focuses on economic activity and improving the quality of life of those living in the sugar cane belt areas. The project aims at providing people with supplementary means to sustain and improve their livelihood by supplying them with new, improved seeds and seedlings for food crops.
