Congratulations to my colleague, Dr. Mary Healy, on her appointment to the Pontifical Biblical Commission. I had just started reading her book on the Gospel of Mark and now, instead of walking down the hall to ask her questions, I’ll probably have to take a number. Which I am delighted to do! With Healy’s appointment, Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit now has four pontifical appointees advising Roman dicasteries ( Janet E. Smith was appointed by John Paul II to the Council on the Family, Ralph Martin and I were appointed by Benedict XVI to the Commission on New Evangelization and the Apostolic Signatura respectively, while a fifth faculty member, Fr. John McDermott, sj, just completed his term on the International Theological Commission). None of these appointees, however, any more than does Sacred Heart, see such appointments as “awards” or occasions for self-satisfaction. Rather, we see these assignments as occasions to be of ever greater service to the Church. (Still, congrats Mary!)
