Congratulations to one of our 2014 Recognize The Real Honorees Shanduke McPhatter. Shanduke has been living successfully in the After Math of prison Incarceration for 6 years now! Shanduke states, “ Between 1994 – 2008 I gave the system about 12 plus years on the installment plan.” This included many different stays on Rikers Island, including one city year and many stays of weeks and months fighting cases. Shanduke did 21 months on Rikers Island while falsely accused of murder from March 2003 - November 2004. Shanduke’s journey also included two State prison sentences of 3 years until he was granted parole in May of 2008. Shanduke completed 5 years of post-release supervision without catching any new cases on April 24th of 2013. Before Shanduke’s first arrest, he states, “I was just an average teen growing up in Brooklyn with no real guidance.” After his first ‘bid’, Shanduke attempted to get his life together but was thrown off track and went back to the streets to survive and take care of his children. Shanduke was still in high school when he was dealt his first prison sentence. While in prison he was able to get his GED; Shanduke states, “OTHER THAN THAT, MY ONLY ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS GETTING MORE VIOLENT AND RAISING MY STATUS IN THE ‘BLOODS.” Shanduke is a prime example of the power that exist in NOT GIVING UP ON OUR YOUTH; in believing that people CAN change, people CAN transform – regardless of what the ‘track record’ may state. . Shanduke’s accomplishments after prison have been many; which he continues to add to. Shanduke is a committed Father, raising his twin sons. He started his nonprofit organization (Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes) which deals with the gun violence, prison life and helping others change their lives as he did. Shanduke has been featured and highlighted on many platforms, including being featured on NY1 as NYER OF THE WEEK! We are honored to be in a position to honor Shanduke McPhatter this year at our Annual Recognize The Real Award Ceremony. The purpose of RTR is to assist our communities in seeing our loved ones as human beings 1st and being convicted of a crime 2nd. Our mission is to give loved ones currently incarcerated, those released and those who knowingly or unknowingly on their way to Prison Incarceration a real, honest example of the alternative; that transformation is possible for anyone who chooses to achieve it. Community Members are encouraged to register for our Annual Recognize The Real Award Ceremony for FREE at recognizethereal.info as we COLLECTIVELY support, uplift and acknowledge some of our loved ones who are living successfully in the After Math of prison incarceration ~Ls Up “To judge another is to be blinded by our own secrets, our own flaws”..
