Congratulations to our Innovation of the Year in Patient Care (under 150 beds) award recipient, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center! The University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center multi-disciplinary project team “Team CTU Miami” worked to reduce the wait time for outpatient cancer patients needing same-day chemotherapy and laboratory services. Using Six Sigma methodology, the team analyzed processes and identified areas of efficiency improvement that resulted in a 53 percent decrease in laboratory turnaround time and a 26 percent decrease in wait time for patients. At the start, patients were waiting on average 48 minutes from arrival to chair, and lab turnaround time was 52 minutes. Through analysis, the team reduced the number of touch points for patients (from eight to four), centralized registration, lab work and infusion to one location and improved processes for prioritizing lab work, resulting in improved workflow and processing of patients. With these cost neutral modifications, Team CTU Miami took 14 minutes off the arrival to chair time, and was able to reduce laboratory turnaround time from 52 minutes down to 24 minutes, giving cancer patients back minutes of their lives.
