Congratulations to the Nation’s Youth on this special day and a salute the country’s heroes. Today is the third part of this week’s ongoing series of stories of Chargé d’Affairs Katherine Dueholm’s trip around Timor-Leste, during which she, appropriate to this day, engaged with Same’s youth. Arriving in Manufahi District capital of Same at the end of a long drive from Dili, with stops in Aileu and Maubisse, the Chargé had a very cordial meeting with District Administrator Filomeno Tilman in his offices (see photo). The two discussed the future of Manufahi District, including the planned oil refinery for the Timor Sea coast. The Administrator said that the people of Same were known throughout Timor as speaking less, but doing more. With major construction on the Maubisse-Same road well underway, the Chargé saw many examples of the hard work being done by Manufahi’s citizens. As the sun set over Same, the Chargé finished the day at Radio Boaventura, founded in 2002 and in a beautiful location overlooking Same town. After a brief and friendly chat with the station staff and representatives from the Radio Council, the Chargé had another opportunity to speak to young people from the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). The Chargé was deeply impressed by the energy and commitment of the District’s youth to improve not only their own situation, but that of all the residents of the District. Several of them were active in organizations that provided capacity building, social activities and aid to orphans and elderly citizens. They also shared their post school plans, which ranged from social activities, caring for vulnerable people and sharing their hard won knowledge through radio to young people living in remote areas. Tomorrow we have our long drive from Same to Viqueque!
